The use of AI Imagery in Games

Get Ready for Launch!

While it's been a while since my last post, I haven't stopped working! The new DivisionSworn is now released!

My stance on AI Art

I've been a writer since I was a kid. I still have 50 page short stories from when I was in fourth grade, pages and pages of yellow-lined paper crammed into folders. While I'm personally not great at illustration, it doesn't mean I don't deeply respect the medium, talent, and effort required to do it well.

The writer's strike this past year, was of particular concern to me. The ability for AI to not just create new work, but siphon away the greatness of so many others is disheartening.

My choice to use AI Art in Division Sworn

All this went into my mind when building Division Sworn.  I knew I wanted to give the book more meat than the previous release (just a bunch of cards), but I also had no money to put into the project. More importantly, I don't have the license, so it felt like a lot to invest money on something that I really can't make money back on.

This is where a criteria emerged that I became more comfortable using AI art with. A situation in which I was doing a project that:

  • couldn't really make money
  • I didn't hold the IP license for
  • I would give away for free
  • would dramatically benefit from the inclusion of art

And in that, I decided to go ahead. If you choose to donate, I appreciate it, but you absolutely don't have to. This project is for everyone to enjoy, and it's totally free.

If you have a stance on AI art, and this violates that, then you have my apologies. I'll understand if you skip this project.
