Missions & Oracles Preview

First, a thanks

I recently released a zine for Star Trek Adventures: Captain's Log, and to keep track to the myriad of ships I'm adding, I threw it up here on Itch. Imagine my surprise when I found that the number of downloads for this mod were as popular as the zine!

Thank you for your interest! It has inspired me to double down my efforts and knock out the latest version of the guide.

What's next

The copy is written for the guide, and I'm over halfway through the process of designing the book. It's going pretty fast now. I'm going to take an extra couple of weeks, as I've learned a lot of lessons from the Star Trek zine that I want to bring into this.

Over these next few weeks, however, I'll add some sneak previews about what's coming. Ideally, I want this out before Halloween.

Down the line, I'll look at creating a zine for playing this, too.

Missions

Like quests in Ironsworn: Starforged, Missions are long-term challenges that you must overcome. Missions are designed to be entirely designed by Oracle. As you can see in the preview above, there are six different core mission types:

  • Elimination
  • Repair
  • Retrieval
  • Recon
  • Protect
  • Diplomacy

These were heavily inspired by existing Division missions, and in combination with several other oracles at the end of the book, you can generate new pressing needs rather quickly.

Designing missions through oracles was a huge priority- not just in terms of ease of generation, but also in quality of content. As a huge fan of modular narrative aids like The Story EngineMythic Card Deck, and of course, Ironsworn, each 'component' of the mission needed to be big and chunky, yet it needed to offer significant diversity when pairing with other components.

Each of the six main mission types has another 20 random objectives that are paired along with it. Those can then be applied to an existing location in your Area of Operation, or you can generate a new one, starting with the oracle example below.

Oracles

With over 20 oracles in this book, you can generate an entire Area of Operation, complete with factions, locations, allies, and key points of interest. Speaking of locations, let's preview the first oracle below:

With a d100 and a few rolls, you can completely design the Key Points of Interest in your Area of Operation, or defined region of play. Use this during the session zero (rules are included in the book), or on the fly, when you're rolling up a new mission.

With another oracle, you can apply attributes to the location; things like dilapidated infrastructure, or reclaimed, giving the location a hook to describe its current condition.

There are many other oracles, too, helping you build Allies (with a wild list of over 100 jobs that they come from), a list of settlement roles, which includes different roles allies will fill, like scavenger, engineer, childcare specialist, or even garden crew.

Get Ready

Thanks again for your support! I'm amped to get this in your hands and playing soon.
