The Importance of Roles
Roles Matter
As you may have noticed in the features, I included what I felt was three important features for each ship: the launch date, main role, and brief description. This was important. As most players aren't ridiculous nerds like me, the ship choice needs to be more than aesthetic. It needs to also be practical. Your ship influences what type of game you're playing. Whether it be diplomatic, dangerous, or just plain dramatic, the ship is a character.
And whatever it's going to do is important.
Adding Flavor
Sometimes, you'll notice I added non-canon information about a ship, or a ship type. During this process, I attempted to be as accurate as possible, scouring Memory Alpha, Beta, and popular wikis. I've followed many a link, read Star Trek Online articles, and Developer logs to better understand the intent behind each ship.
Occasionally, there just isn't enough canon information about a ship. The Nautilus is a great example of that. While wanting to introduce time ships, I scoured as much as I could to help give players the right hooks to use this ship. It can't just be a time ship- it has to have a role. There needs to be substance there, a reason why you're picking it over the other classes of the era.
As the ship is of the lineage of the Olympic and Nobel classes, it felt like this would also be committed to humanitarian operations. So, I inferred that and included information that supports it.
Your story is your own
While I may be adding data here and there, don't consider mine the end all be all. You're the storyteller here, don't be afraid to add your own.
Maybe in your universe the Earhart class is a pure attack carrier (and not a rapid response vessel). Or, perhaps your commission is an oddity- an unlikely use for an existing class. Either is totally acceptable, in fact, it's encouraged. Voyager wasn't intended to be a war ship- but she could hold her own when she needed to.
I waffled for a long time over the right word to describe the common role each space frame had. I settled on Main Role, because I felt like it would be easy for you to deviate. However, feel free to totally ignore it when it suits you. I'm sure there were plenty of Galaxy-class vessels that served as hospital ships.
New Updates
In the coming version, I'm not only adding 20+ ships, I'm also going to add a frame that you can insert, in case you need to change existing stats. Many of Starfleet's vessels were designed with modular mission pods, as well as mission profiles, and those should be changeable. You don't have to, but this section will be available for you.
I've also statted out over a dozen STO ships, and a whole host of new updates will be added, including:
- Paladin Class
- Theseus Class
- Nobel Class
- Olympic Class
- Oberth Class
- Grissom Class
- Resolute Class
- Steamrunner Class
- Norway Class
- Nova Class
- Sabre Class
- Scryer Class
- Phantom Class
- Vesta Class
- Luna Class
- Pathfinder Class
This should fill out a whole host of the Science and Escort vessels that have yet to make it into the zine.
